Fox Corporation’s Tubi streaming platform has entered the UK market, offering over 20,000 films and TV series, including content from Disney, Lionsgate, NBCUniversal, and Sony Pictures Entertainment.
The free, ad-supported service will compete with Netflix, Disney+, ITVX, Channel 4’s streaming platform, and BBC iPlayer.
Tubi CEO Anjali Sud said, “Tubi has spent the last decade honing our approach to vast, free and fun streaming in North America, and we feel that now is the perfect time to bring that recipe to UK audiences.” The platform has gained popularity in the US, with almost 80 million monthly active users.
The UK version will include British, Indian, and Nigerian content, accessible via the Tubi webpage and smartphone app. This move follows Fox Corporation’s acquisition of Tubi in 2020 for $440m, aiming to attract younger audiences.
The launch comes as streaming services face increasing competition, leading some to introduce ad-supported services and raise subscription prices. Rupert Murdoch’s TalkTV network, launched in 2022, recently transitioned to an online-only service after struggling to attract viewers on its linear platform.
Murdoch’s 21st Century Fox previously sold its 39% stake in Sky to Comcast in 2018. The media tycoon’s entry into the UK streaming market is seen as a strategic move to recreate his success with Sky.
