The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced that the national grid was restored at 9:57 pm on Saturday after a partial collapse earlier in the day.
According to a statement by TCN’s General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, the grid disturbance occurred at 3:09 pm on Saturday, prompting immediate restoration efforts by operators.
Mbah explained that the disturbance was suspected to have been triggered by the unexpected tripping of three units of a power generating station, resulting in the loss of 313 Megawatts and system instability.
However, the system operator reacted swiftly to the sudden drop in generation, islanding a section of the grid that includes the Ibom Power Station to maintain supply to areas such as Uyo, Aba, Itu, Eket, Calabar, and others.
“This action enabled the continued supply of electricity to these areas even when the other section of the grid had no supply,” Mbah noted.
The restoration of the entire affected grid was achieved by 9:57 pm on Saturday, TCN confirmed.
This incident marks the third partial grid disturbance and one total disturbance in 2024.
