President Bola Tinubu’s leadership of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has been extended for another year.
The unanimous decision was made at the 65th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, which took place at the State House in Abuja on Sunday ¹ ².
In his acceptance speech, Tinubu expressed his commitment to continue serving the region, stating, “I have accepted to continue to deliver on this service with the great men and women on this democratic journey, to serve our interest and build democratic values on the structure we inherited” ¹.
Tinubu’s re-election comes as no surprise, as sources close to the Presidency had hinted at the possibility on Saturday night. While some had speculated that he might hand over the reins, others believed he would continue in the role ¹.
This development marks Tinubu’s second term as ECOWAS Chairman, having first assumed the position at the 63rd Ordinary Session in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau, last July ³ ¹ ⁴.
