The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has launched a passionate appeal for the safe return of Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, a resident doctor at the National Eye Centre in Kaduna, who was kidnapped on December 27, 2023.
Dr. Popoola was abducted alongside her husband and nephew, but while her husband was released after a ransom was paid, she and her nephew remain in captivity.
NARD has taken to social media to express concern and call for action, using the hashtag #BringBackDrGaniyat. In a series of posts, the association described Dr. Popoola as “a mother, sister, aunt, wife, helpmaid” who has been in captivity for “7 months, not 7 minutes.”
The association lamented that despite the release of Dr. Popoola’s husband, she and her nephew have been held captive for over six months, and desperately need help to bring her home safely.
NARD’s campaign has sparked widespread concern within the medical community, with many calling for urgent action to secure Dr. Popoola’s release. As the days turn into weeks, and the weeks into months, the association’s pleas for help grow more desperate. Will Dr. Popoola be reunited with her family and colleagues soon? Only time will tell.
