The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a stern warning to the federal government, demanding the immediate and unconditional release of its President, Joe Ajaero, who was arrested and detained on Monday.
The labour union made the demand during an emergency meeting convened in Abuja, following Ajaero’s arrest at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, while on his way to the United Kingdom for a meeting.
According to a resolution obtained by DAILY POST, the NLC has given the government an ultimatum, demanding Ajaero’s release before 12 midnight on Monday. The union also demanded the immediate reversal of the hike in the price of petrol to N617/Litre, describing it as a “punitive” measure that has caused hardship for Nigerians.
The NLC has placed all its affiliates, state councils, civil society allies, and the Nigerian populace on red alert, warning that it will not hesitate to take mass action if its demands are not met. The union has also summoned an emergency meeting of the National Executive Council (NEC) by 9:00 am on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, to discuss the next line of action.
The labour union’s demands are seen as a bold move to assert its influence and protect the rights of Nigerian workers. With the NLC’s threat of mass action, the government may be forced to reconsider its stance on the petrol price hike and Ajaero’s detention. The outcome of the NEC meeting on Tuesday will be closely watched by Nigerians, as the labour union prepares to take on the government over its demands.
